Cuyo, Colonial Capital of Palawan Islands (Michael Jackson was also here) Bucket List Series

We recently visited the town of Cuyo in Cuyo island… It is part of the Cuyo archipelago (comprising of 45 plus islands including one island that is the site of Amanpulo resort in Pamilacan

Cuyo was the colonial capital of Paragua (old name of Palawan). Cuyunon (local language) is spoken by the older generation educated (and political?) families in Palawan both in the island as well as the Palawan mainland (result of migration)

Hands down, the small town’s allure is the slow, unhurried pace; where the local social capital may still be high.

This “slo mo “scenery may not readily excite the Gen Z eyes; but the curious and inquisitive mind may be rewarded with a glimpse of its kaleidoscopic history– evidenced by a mosaic of colonial forts, churches and memories of early American agricultural education system…as well as of local song; dance, and poetry. … (Cuyo was the location of the movie “Ploning “)

It is known for high quality cashew growing heritage (together with the native lato). But sadly, the Agri sector seems to be declining. (Competition from other towns, climate change etc.)

The land is mostly in private hands, and there is practically no natural forest cover-

Perhaps as compensation; backyard based multistory ” halo halo ” gardens of cashew. mango and other tree crops, plus gmelina, mahogany etc. are grown together… As home-grown farming system they can somehow mimic the forest (tho imperfectly).

Concluding Eco notes: —to sustain the above desirable local features. there may be a need for consider it as island ecosystem – beyond being an island where two towns exist.

This would involve a decision not to focus only coastal and marine protection (PCSD mandate) but also to enhance the agro forest cover (make it more biodiverse) in order to help adapt to the harsh effects of climate change.  Consequently, this could enhance livelihoods and sustain the island’s character as socio ecological heirloom in this part of the country.

PS…in one chapter of the island history there was a local initiative in one part of the island; to establish the (short lived) local Republic (Republic of Lucbuan). This happened during the “interregnum ” between. Spain and America. interesting to study further!
