SAVORING  EUROPE  THROUGH SPACE AND TIME

PART 1- OVERVIEW, ITALY

My wife and I visited this fascinating continent in in 2023. We covered eleven cities in four countries over 36 days* This was made possible by x train trips, x stays in Air BNBs and 20000 steps daily walk along epic avenues, rivers banks, trails, shopping alleys etc. The  2023 visit was actually my fifth  , but earlier visits were very short and limited to single  places related to my profession.

The vacation this time was primarily for R&R. In the desire to   optimize learning of a whirlwind journey, I realized that I had to enrich my “travel in space “(land) with “a travel in time” (i.e., brushing up on European early history)

For indeed, the present Europe is but the product of the evolution of aspirations, discoveries, inventions and belief systems, which started in the olden days. Examples of early thought are   those on philosophy, liberty, equality, democracy, humanism, capitalism and socialism, among others.   Even as most of these belief systems were achieved though bloodshed, they tend to be mostly taken for granted today.

NAVIGATING THE SPACE

Navigating the space was made possible, by the indispensable physical map of this boomer, and supplemented by the more modern day google map. The all-reliable Euro train service (more expensive than plane fare?) made the multi city visit more feasible and pleasure (escaping to the stress of airports) …10 minutes between trains

Navigating the time though the lazy mans “bedside” research (at night) allowed us to also travel vicariously through the ages, see box.

TRAVEL THROUGH SPACE (1O CITIES) AND TIME (SELECTED PERIODS). for validation

1. ROME: REMINSICING THE ROMAN EMPIRE

https://dam.cicerone.co.uk/book/1082/the-river-rhone-cycle-route-location-map.jpg

The various scenes in Rome reminded me of the Roman Empire which has greatly influenced Western civilization, with its language, administrative and legal system among others.
The remnants of ancient Rome reminded us of the both the bright side (government institutions) and the dark side (slavery, debauchery)

2. The VATICAN:  THE GREAT CATHOLIC REACH

The Vatican scene reminded us of the wide reach of the Church in Europe from its humble beginnings led by Peter. Little did Peter and the   faithful of early church know that the Church (represented by the Vatican) would eventually be involved in either the brokering or bringing down royal marriages and kingdoms in the early days.

St. Peters Basilica

The solid façade and celestial interior/canopy St Peters Basilica /square are mute witness of evolution of the faith.  This would be from the early evangelization days driven by the zeal of faith to the days when the church    wielded soft political power over the daily lives of European forefathers (medieval period) which eventually giving way to canon reforms. These reforms in turn laid the foundation for church activism of today.

3. FLORENCE, PISA AND MILAN: FROM IMPLORING THE DIVINE TO CELEBRATING THE HUMAN

The visit to Florence Pisa and Milan reminded us of the little we know of the renaissance. This was the period that succeeded the medieval age, it was the age of” rebirth “of interest in the classical antiquity of Greece and Rome and what these two places inspired.

An example is the concept of” humanism “and importance of human dignity and secular thinking   in contrast to the religion centered thinking of the medieval period.  Free thinking flourished which led to important geographic explorations, scientific discoveries and innovations in governing.

Florence was considered as the cradle of the renaissance while Milan was considered a major artistic sanctuary and trade hub that provided the economic foundation of the period. We marveled at the architecture and sculpture of the countless churches visited. We also realized how the different forms of architecture, frescoes and art reflected the mood of the times.
Gothic Churches built during the medieval period emphasized “verticality and ornamentation” They aimed to” inspire awe and elevate the spirit, often towering above cities with dramatic spires and light-filled interiors”.

Accordingly, the construction of Cathedral in Milan took 600 years and encompassed both the medieval and renaissance period, Art forms from both periods are thus reflected

Thus, cathedral is primarily Gothic (it has 135 spires), but with Renaissance touches that reflect Milan’s evolving artistic and cultural identity at that time.
Renaissance churches (e. g the Duomo in Florence above) ” Renaissance buildings reflect humanism and rationality, emphasizing proportion, clarity, and the rediscovery of classical ideals.”
Craftsmanship Trade and Commerce from the early days yo the modern times. Alas, even “made in China” leather has also penetrated the Florence Market.

4. VENICE – FROM MARITIME POWER TO TOURISM KING- NOW UNDER THREAT BY CLIMATE CHANGE

In the early days, lagoons and eventually canals were important part of defense system against enemies, and served trade and culture. In modern times it is an important foundation for tourism. But the canals are also witness to what was once the Republic of Venice. Alas, today the carrying capacity of canal system is very much threated by excessive mass tourism (X X visitors annual) and   rising seas due to climate change.
The Republic of Venice (697-1797) was a formidable naval power who ruled a large part of  Northeastern Italy and some coastal societies along the Adriatic Sea which Venice served as hub for Trade between the west and east. The story “Merchant in Venice”. The republic Venice eventually fell to Napoleon in 1796.
The Vaporetto
The canal system is under major threat by rising seas due to climate change mitigation measures are underway.
